FSA Spiral Review of all skills and standards. (Math and Reading)

Theme: Economics- students are creating a budget and business plan for our Rock Store front. Items will be available for purchase on 4/23/19 during end of the year fundraiser. 

 

3/26/19

FSA Writing Exam 4/2/19 

Math: Scientists Topic 12 Homework was sent home today, we will begin our lesson tomorrow Test on Friday. Artists: Topic 13 homework was sent hone today, we will begin our lesson tomorrow Test on Monday. 

ELA: We are focused on Writing Boot Camp this week, scholars will practice paragraph writing, scoring example writings and sentence improvement.

3/12/19

Math: All scholars will 

ELA: Scholars are getting ready for FSA, making inferences based on what we read in any given text. It is helpful when reading or listening to books at home to discuss how characters are feeling after events, and how can you tell. 

Writing: Opinion and Informational Writing. Ask your scholars about T.A.G or T.A.G.E. 

Theme: Room Transformation is going to be exciting! Thank you for all the donations !!! 

2/19/19 

Math: Thursday is test day! Scientists will take Topic 9 test. Artists will take Topic 10 test. 

ELA: Scholars are continuing book study, digging deep with vocabulary words from book study. 

Theme: We are loving habitats! Our room transformation has begun as we palm leaves. Feel free to make some at home using green construction or printer paper. Any size works. 

2/12/19

Math: All scholars will take a test tomorrow. Scientists will begin Topic 9, dividing fractions. Artists will begin Topic 10: Multiplying Fractions by a whole number. Homework for the next topic was sent home today.  

ELA: Scholars are continuing book study, digging deep with vocabulary words from book study. 

Theme: Showcase is TBD, but we are preparing for a total room transformation! We are dedicated to our habitat the Pinelands of Florida. The most common known area is Paynes Prairie. 

 

1/29/19

Math: Scientists have started topic 8, multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Scholars have learned two strategies (Standard and Area Model). For extra practice, students can use Khan Academy. We will continue to learn more strategies. Artists are working on Topic 1-8 Benchmark Exam. This exam is about 6 pages front and back. Artists have the remainder of the week to work on the exam.  

ELA: Scholars are working on vocabulary and figurative language as it appears in novels and poetry. During independent times students will deepen their knowledge through ReadWorks articles and questions. 

Theme: Showcase 1/31/19 12:45-1:15pm

 

1/22/19

Math: Scientists are working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Artists are working on equivalent fractions. Our goal is to test both grades on Friday. Both groups should come home with the study guide today and tomorrow. 

ELA: Scholars are working on point of view, vocabulary, and figurative language as it appears in novels and poetry.

Math:  Scientists have started topic 7, which was sent home before the winter break. If you need a new homework packet please let us know via email or student message. Artists have started topic 8, students have been assigned practice work on the online platform. I have attached to the link and password inside of the Tuesday update email, your scholar's username was sent home today. 

ELA: Scholars are focused on their new group book study, vocabulary and point of view. Artists are reading: Green Book and Scientists are reading Phantom Tollbooth.

Theme: Students continue to prepare for Earth Showcase

Math: Scholars completed Topic 16 a copy of their test will be sent home.

ELA: Students worked on writing SMART goals and prepared for a new book study.

12/3-12/4

Theme: Students will be going on a field trip this Friday to put their Rock Skills to the test! 

Math: Giraffe Scholars (artists and scientists) will be ready to test on Topic 5 this Thursday. Topic 6 homework will come home 12/4 and will be due back 12/13. 

ELA: Scholars this week are completing the FSA Style winter writing practice.

Homework: Today we sent home Topic 5 Practice test please return Thursday. Tuesday 12/4- Topic 6 homework packet will be sent home. 

 

11/27/18

Theme: Our Scholars have started the Rock Cycle!

Math: We have started Topic 5. Artists are focused on Single Digit Division. Scientists are focused on Double Digit Long Division. We highly encourage Khan Academy or Prodigy practice.  

ELA: This week on Thursday students will present their Tropicana Speeches in class. Threes students from each class will be chosen to participate school-wide competition at a later date. 

Homework: This weeks homework includes Properties of Matter ELA/Science work and Topic 5 Math homework.  

 

11/6/18

Theme: Showcase is this Thursday inside the Giraffe Classroom. We welcome you with open arms to join us Thursday, November 8th at 12:45-1:15.

Math: Topic 4 Math test has been pushed back to November 16th. 

ELA: Student focus has been showcase writing. Narrative writing, first-person point of view. 

Homework: The next batch of homework will be sent home next week. 

10/30/18

Theme: Our first field trip will be November 13th to the Old Florida Capitol and Museum of Florida History (information will be coming home soon). The showcase will be November 8th  12:45-1:15 Don't forget to RSVP!

Math: Scientists are working on Topic 4 and will Test on Tuesday, November 6th. Artists: Have started Topic 4 and will test November 15th. 

ELA: Independent work students are working on Key Ideas and Details. Teacher table One: is focused on Text Evidence and Making Inferences    Teacher table. We are focused on informational writing. 

Homework: ELA/Science homework has been sent home for the next 2 weeks. Scientists brought home there FCAT science test packet, we will be practicing study skills in preparation

Math: Scientists are working on Topic 4, will test next Thursday. Topic 4 is a 2-page test. Artists: Are spending the rest of the week on reviewing of topics 1-3Will begin Topic 4 on Monday. 

ELA: Ms. Loughlin is working hard with our scholars on the different types of writing. Ms. Katherine is focused on text-evidence as well as making inferences. Students are working independently on a novel study (Publisher/Printers) Flush by Carl Hasen and (Author/Editor)Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo. 

 

 

10/17/18

Theme: Your scholars have been studying different aspects of American History for our current theme.  We are getting very excited about all of the projects each class is doing as well as being able to show them off!  For our many projects, we are putting together a small supply request list.  Look for this list by the end of the week.  We thank you for your generosity and support!  

Math: Scientists are spending this week reviewing the different strategies available to solve double digit multiplication. Artists will test on Topic 3 on Tuesday. 

ELA: We are deep in our reading groups! This week Ms. Katherine's group is working on searching for text evidence and Ms. Loughlin's group is focused on paragraph writing. 

Homework: No math homework will be sent home this week. Scientists are encouraged to work on Khan Academy (electricity permitting) and Artists are still completing Topic 3 which had 10 lessons. ELA homework every 2 weeks I will be sending home a packet of science-based homework that has elements of Language Arts questioning. If your scholar did not bring one home on 10/16/18, I will be sure to send one home today.

 

 

10/2/18

Theme: We started our new theme last week, American History.  This theme will take us on an adventure through the past as our country was forming and growing.  We have a couple of exciting days planned and we are looking for volunteers to help run the stations and donate supplies to help complete the day!  Look for a signup list next week. - Ms.Christy.

Math: Scientists will be ready to test Friday. Artists will test on the 10/11. Math homework went home today.

ELA: Students have begun reading groups. Monday Wednesday and Friday students will rotate through 4 centers during the reading blocks and receive small group instruction based on their skill set. The centers include; 2 different teacher tables, a novel study listening station, and an independent workstation. 

Homework: Math homework came home. Please continue with the vocabulary homework from last week. ( If you would like more homework each week please reach out to me via email or at our conference.

9/25/18

Theme: We are beginning a new theme topic: Pre-Columbia North America. We will be sending a sign-up genius in the near future, the showcase will be a "room transformation" and we are extremely excited. 

Math: We are wrapping up Topic 2 this week. We have launched our khanacademny.org accounts today in class. Inside of Tuesday folders should be your scholar's username and password. Each grade level has been assigned work to do, we will be working on it some in class, it is great extra practice! 

ELA: Reading Groups are getting off to a slow start. We have a novel study planned this year, students will be listening to a "book on tape" in a small group setting. Ms. Loughlin will be teaching writing and Ms. Katherine will be teaching nonfiction and fiction text structures along with test-taking skills. 

Homework: Thursday will be our first vocabulary quiz, we sent home a vocabulary choice board with definitions on the back, please complete at least 4 of the activity boxes. You will also find "parts of speech activity". 

 

Reminders:  Homework is optional for all families. We suggest at least 20 minutes of family reading each night and math fact practice of multiplication tables. If you and your scholar are running out of time to finish homework, just send in back when it is complete. If we need something back on a certain we will let you know via email.

Theme: Showcase was a success! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it. If you were unable, you will be able to see your scholars work at their first portfolio showcase. 

Math: The following link will take you to an online platform to practice adding and subtracting decimals. This is a "playlist" in Google Docs that allows students to follow a series of videos that scaffold each lesson. You may do this in addition to the math homework. It is vital that the students get some practice with the Envision word problems.

ELA: Coming home today are the first set of vocabulary words with a Vocab. choice board. Scholars should complete four items on the choice.

ELA: Leveled reading groups have begun. This week we are covering expectations, growth mindset and expectations in our groups.  ELA homework will start coming home next week. We will also be starting a vocabulary quiz with vocabulary homework. 

Math: Our first math test on Friday. Topic 1 is focused on Place Value for both Artists and Scientists. 

Homework: No homework was sent home today. Continue to work on math from last week.

Writing: Setting and achieving goals (getting in the swing of writing in with details.)

Theme
We are off to a fun start with t
heme this year.  The first two weeks were focused on Science and STEM activities.  This week we are kicking off our first theme unit of the year - Civics and Government.  This will be a short but meaningful unit ending with our first showcase on Tuesday, September 18th from Time: TBA. For this showcase, students are asked to come dressed in red, white, and blue colors if possible.  We look forward to seeing you then! Showcase wish list - Parchment style paper.  If you would like to donate materials please send them by Thursday Sept.6.  Thank you for your support and generosity!

Tuesday Blue Phoneix Folder

Blue Phoneix folders will go home every Tuesday and be returned every Friday. There are two pockets one for items that should be returned to school and one for items to keep at home. Please return all items that need to be returned by Friday. 

 

Homework

The first 6 weeks of school, we are focused on building a healthy soil and setting up procedures and structures. Once we complete our procedures and expectations book, your scholar will receive a copy to keep at home and review as necessary. 

 

The scholars requested a mini-homework assignment last week. Some students have already completed it. We are looking for a drawing of a giraffe and one fact about giraffes to share with the class when they turn it in on Friday. 

 

*homework is always optional.

 

Academics

This week we are starting the beginning of the year assessments. Next week, we will take our first dive into academic rigor. Language Arts will be taught using instructional materials from Reading A-Z and Read Read Works. Math instruction will be taught using Envision.
